Role of stabilizers

Stabilizers are important components that have a significant impact on cornering dynamics and handling stability.

Also called an anti-roll bar, it is a type of torsion spring.

When the vehicle body tries to roll during cornering, a twisting force is generated by the stabilizers, which presses the left and right undercarriage against the road surface and reduces roll.

Stabilizers are generally attached to the vehicle body and undercarriage via stabilizer links.

The stabilizer link converts the vertical motion of the undercarriage (suspension) into a circular arc motion and transmits it to the stabilizer, which becomes the force of the circular arc motion, generating a twisting force on the stabilizer.

Decreased stabilizer effectiveness due to lifting

Lifting up the vehicle moves the body and suspension away from the vehicle and changes the mounting position relationship of the stabilizers. At the same time, the mounting angles of the stabilizer and links change.

If the changed mounting angle is not compensated for, the force applied to the stabilizer will be reduced or the position at which the stabilizer begins to work will become earlier, and the stabilizer will not be able to perform at its 100% capacity.

It also leads to deterioration of ride quality.

Proper functioning of stabilizers by adding corrections

If the mounting position relationship of the stabilizer is expressed in terms of fulcrum, force point, and action point, in the stock condition, the force acts at almost 90 degrees to the action point when stroking, so the force from the road surface can be transmitted to the stabilizer without loss.

When lifting is performed without correction, the force acts at an angle to the point of action, and the force is dispersed, resulting in a smaller force transmitted to the stabilizer than originally intended. In addition, since the force is exerted against the lateral direction, it leads to deterioration of ride quality.

In addition, depending on the vehicle, the stabilizer is always under tension even at 1G. When tension is applied, even when driving straight on a flat road surface, the stabilizer will function on its own, resulting in loss of the suspension's original movement.

This issue, where the lifting has moved the sway bar mounting position away from the sway bar, can be solved by adding compensation to the sway bar.

One method is to extend the stabilizer links with stabilizer stays. The stabilizer stay, which connects the stabilizer to the suspension, is properly compensated by extending it so that it is equal to the amount of lift away.

Another method is to install a stabilizer downblock. The mounting position (fulcrum) of the stabilizer can be properly compensated by lowering it by an amount equivalent to the amount of lift away.
